Nutrition Coach ("the app", "we") is a food-tracking and nutrition-coaching app for people in the United States. This policy explains what we collect, why, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and how you can delete it. We wrote it to match what the app actually does. If you have a question, write to the contact address above.
The app is for people aged 13 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13.
Nutrition Coach is not medical advice. The app gives general nutrition information and food suggestions. It doesn't diagnose, treat or prevent any condition, and it isn't a substitute for a doctor or registered dietitian. Talk to a qualified professional before changing your diet, especially if you're pregnant, have a medical condition, or take medication.
Account. Your email address and a password. Sign-in is handled by Supabase Authentication, which stores your email, a hashed password and sign-in records. We never see your password in plain text.
Profile and body stats. Your name (optional), gender, age, height, weight, goal weight (optional), goal (for example lose weight or maintain), activity level, and the calorie, protein, carb, fat, fiber and water targets we calculate or you set. We also store your time zone and preferred units.
Diet preferences. Diet type, allergens, cuisines you prefer and foods you exclude. We use these so the coach doesn't suggest foods you avoid.
Food logs. Each food you log, with the date, meal, amount and unit, and any note you add. Nutrition totals and coach suggestions are calculated from these logs.
Water intake. Each amount of water you log, with its date. Water entries are kept separately from food logs and aren't used for nutrition totals or coach suggestions.
Weight history. Each weigh-in you log, with its date. We use it to show your weight trend and keep the weight in your profile up to date.
Calorie target suggestions. When adaptive targets are on, we estimate how much you burn from your food logs and weight trend and suggest a new calorie target about once a week. We keep a record of each suggestion you accept or decline (the date, the estimate, the old and new target, and your goal pace). You can switch suggestions off in Preferences.
Recipes and custom foods. Recipes you create (name, ingredients, instructions), and foods you add yourself. If you set a recipe to public, other signed-in users can see it. Recipes are private unless you change that.
Feedback. If you report a missing food, wrong nutrition or an idea, we store the text you send, the search text or barcode attached to it, and its status. The maintainer reads these to improve the food database, and may use software tools, including AI tools, to sort and summarize them.
Searches that find nothing. When a food search or barcode scan finds nothing, we count the search text or barcode so we know what to add. These counts aren't linked to you.
Technical logs. Our hosting provider and servers keep standard request logs (time, request address, your IP address and an internal user id) to run the service and find errors. We don't put your email address, tokens or the contents of your logs in them.
Crash and error reports. If the app or our server crashes or hits an error, a report is sent to Sentry so we can fix the bug. It contains the technical details of the crash: a stack trace, the error type, your device model, operating system and app version, and when it happened. It doesn't contain your food logs, what you typed or said, search words, photos, recordings, your email address, your name, your IP address or your sign-in token, and it isn't used for advertising or tracking.
On your phone. Your sign-in session is kept in the iOS Keychain. A few display settings are kept in app storage. The app asks for your camera (to scan barcodes and photograph meals) and microphone (to record a voice description) only when you use those features.
We don't use advertising or analytics tools in the app (the only third-party tool is Sentry's crash reporting, above), we don't track you across other apps or websites, and we don't sell your data.
If you use the "describe your day" feature, we send what you typed, or a meal photo you took, or a voice recording you made, to OpenAI (our AI provider) over an encrypted connection. OpenAI turns it into a list of foods, or into text, and returns the result to us. We use this only to fill in your log preview.
| Service | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Account details, and our database (profile, logs, recipes, feedback) | Sign-in and data storage |
| Railway | Requests to our server, and the server's logs | Running the app's backend |
| Sentry | Crash and error reports: stack traces, device model, OS and app version. No food logs or personal details | Finding and fixing bugs |
| OpenAI | Text, photos or recordings you choose to send to the "describe your day" feature | Turning them into foods |
| Open Food Facts | The barcode number, sent from our server | Looking up a packaged food |
| USDA FoodData Central | Food search words, sent from our server | Finding foods in the US government database |
The barcode and search words sent to Open Food Facts and USDA don't include your name, email or account id. We don't give these companies any other data. We share data with others only if the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or if the app is sold or merged (in which case we'd tell you).
We don't use your data for advertising.
Some of what you give us may be "consumer health data" or "sensitive personal information" under state laws such as the Washington My Health My Data Act, the Nevada health data law, and the California Consumer Privacy Act. In this app that is mostly your body stats (age, height, weight), your goals and targets, your diet and allergen choices, your food logs, your water intake, and your weight history.
We keep your data while your account is open. When you delete your account we remove your profile, food logs, water intake, weight history, calorie target suggestions, recipes, custom foods and feedback from our database, and delete your sign-in account. Deleted data may remain in our providers' backups for a limited time before it's overwritten. Server logs are kept for a limited time by our hosting provider. Anonymous miss counts aren't linked to you and may be kept.
In the app, go to Profile → Delete account. You can also write to the contact address from the email on your account and we'll delete it for you. Deleting your account can't be undone.
Data travels over encrypted connections, and our database sits behind our own access controls. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password. If we learn of a breach affecting your data we'll tell you as the law requires.
If we change how we handle your data we'll update this page and the effective date, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app before they take effect.
